Miss Mockoy and boorders 1916

End of an Era

The early history of boarding is somewhat clouded. The actual date of the fTst boarders coming to Brisbane Girls Grammar Schoolis uncertain. in 1875 Mrs O'Connor applied to the Trustees to take boarders into her own home. The request was refused on the grounds that she had a husband and sons in the house and it would not be appropriate At Brisbane Grammar School "accredited Ladies" and Masters took pupils into their own homes and they attended the school virtually as day pupils In Prideaux's book: Brisbane Gills Grammar School: The First Sixty Years 1875-1935, he states that an Emily Cox was the first boarder - but we have 00 record of this - or of her as a pupil in 1875 and 1877 Bertha and Matilda Buborff came to the School from Warwick, but we do not know where they stayed. Likewise with Marianne Carson, who came to the School from Charters Towers in 1878. It is probable that she boarded with Miss Mackinlay - probably at her residence, because the house where the Schoo was conducted was not used for residential purposes by the previous Lady Principals. Miss Mackinlay made Marianne a beneficiary in her will - which suggests a strong tie. Miss Beanland took boarders - her mother came with her to Queensland and they moved into this building in 1884 with the boarders There has been a time when there were only four pupilsin Year 12 Itoday we have six Young ladies) The house has been in continuous use as a residential school Iunti1 14 November 2002 when the last group of boarders will leave and the boarding side of the School will close)
