Softball The first half of the QGSSSA Softball season for 2001, which included the Open and Senior A competitions, got Brisbane Girls Grammar off to a very successful start. This year's competition was the strongest QGSSSA Softball has seen for a number of years, as most teams had at least one State Representative Late last year the Opens set themselves a goal which was to win the premiership this year as they had narrowly missed out on achieving this in the last couple of seasons Each member of this team brought pitching, a marvellous catch or a great hit when it was needed. Every week the team played consistently well and this resulted in the Opens remaining undefeated throughout the season and taking out the premiership with Claneld College for the first time in six years with them considerable talent, whether it came in the form of

Many games were extremely tight but the Opens'most memorable match was against Claneld College which ended in a tie. The determination shown by each girl throughout this game was outstanding and this highlighted the tremendous depth in BGGS Softball. This success was clearly a team effort but special mention must go to Geordan Shannon who performed the mammoth task of pitching This position is taxing enough without having to play two games straight every weekend in games of such calibre. Geordan must also be coinmended for her batting, ending the season with the highest average of 0583. Louise Hogarth also batted consistently well throughout the season, often slamming two or three base hits when the team most needed them. She concluded the season with an average of 0357 Sally Clout, who was one of the rookies of the team, also found form in the batter's box, executing two
marvellous slap bunts against State High. Kate Robinson also set a new record for Grammar Softball. hitting 15 fouls in one turn at bat against Somerville House in the defensive side of the game, Kirby Short excelled in the field Throughout the season Kirby repeatedly put her body on the line, never letting anything get past her Another girl who was marvellous in the field was our first base, Georgia Fleming. She rarely let a ball go past her glove and often pulled down throws that appeared out of her reach The Senior As also had a successful season After having a slow start to the season losing the first couple of games, the As found their form, ending the season in grand style defeating the premiers of the competition, Moreton Bay College, 10-3. The Seniors finished equal third with State High, St Peter's and St Hilda's
The Senior As pitcher, Leisa Robson, not only pitched superbly and consistently throughout the season but she also batted consistently, ending the season with a batting average of 0692 which was the second highest in the team Water polo player, He Ien North, who was a rookie to the team and also to the game of softball, ended the season with an amazing batting average of 0733 and also fielded well executing numerous spectacular dives and catches throughout the season Kelsey Macsporran and Anna MCGilvery ably assisted the Seniors in the catching department with both girls playing consistently in a position neither of them had played The achievements of each softballer highlighted the depth of Grammar Softball
