EPGY : EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR GIFTED YOUTH

Mathematics Extension Program from Stanford University, California

Being involved in the Australian pilot of the Education Program for Gifted Youth has continued to extend those involved and to help students gain greater insight into the mathematical world. Through CD lectures, interactive lessons and coursework from a set textbook, EPGY has allowed the girls to work at their own pace on a higher level of mathematics than is taught in the classroom. it has also introduced students to a totally different learning style. Year I I students Samantha Bonning, Clare KennyTiffany Sproles and Genevieve Thornson are currently completing the Precalculus program. The transition from Year I O to Year 11 Maths B and C has been made easier by being previously introduced to topics in EPGY, and similarly class work has helped with progressing through the computer based course. Three Year 10 students, Stephanie Sheu, Shehara Mendis and Julie Sze, have all finished their Intermediate Algebra course gaining very impressive results. The students will now pursue the Precalculus program.

Caitlin Wilson, Julia Harrison and Angela Sheu of Year 9 will undertake the Intermediate Algebra program during 2000-2001. Miss Nardi, the BGGS tutor, has been extremely helpful in assisting students with any mathematical difficulties and Mrs Wain has provided valuable technical support.
