MATHEMATICS CHALLENGE FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS
Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians run by the Australian Mathematics Trust is an advanced problem solving event in which over 16,000 young Australians explore carefully developed problems, enabling students to broaden their mathematical experience and knowledge. Danielle Nizzero is to be coinmended for participating in this very challenging competition. Credits were awarded to Alex Mercer, Catherine Dawson and Angela Sheu while Grace Sha received a Distinction. Julie Sze received a High Distinction (top 10%), thus gaining entry into the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad. This is a four-hour examination consisting of ten questions.

QAMT PACIFIC COAL COMPETITION
On 3 August, Year 8 students Catherine Dawson, Adelia Ng, Kristy Scandrett and Grace Sha competed in the QAMT Pacific Coal Competition and achieved a score of 29, which was two points behind the eventual winners, In two of the rounds, estimation and team questions, the girls were placed first. The girls gained much from this very
challenging experience which extended their mathematics knowledge and provided them with an opportunity to test their ability to work under pressure, calculating problems both mentally and on paper.
