FENCING

Seven Grammar fencers (Lindsay MCGrath, Peta MCGrath, Rhiannon Mulherin, Catherine Spratley, Kara Ronai, Julia Harrison and Tamara Ham) travelled to Sydney during the June holidays to compete in the Australian National Fencing Competition. The girls not only represented BGGS coinmendably, but also ranked well as the Queensland A and B teams. Grammar fencers achieved great personal results in the Under 15 and Under 17 foil, sabre and epee divisions. Special mention must be made of Lindsay MCGrath who came second in the Australian Schoolgirls foil. On the basis of Lindsay's consistently strong fencing performances, she was selected as a member of the Australian fencing team for the Junior Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh, and came ninth overall.

Fencing at Brisbane Girls Grammar School has become a much larger and diverse club over the past year under the guidance of coach, Paul Crook. With many new and enthusiastic fencers in grades 8 and 9, the club looks to have a bright sporting future. This year, Brisbane Girls Grammar competed in the Queensland SchoolgirlsTeam Foil Competition and attained outstanding results. BGGS A won the competition and placed first in the A division and BGGS B placed second in the B division. BGGS fencers have also been active and successful in other competitions such as the Queensland Amateur Fencing Association School Circuit and Novice competitions.
