WATERPOLO
On 27 March 2000, a BGGS representative team competed in the Queensland State Wide Schools Competition. This team consisted of Suzannah Fraser, Nicole Martin, Jane Holland, Anna Moore, A1ison Cox, Jessica Moles, Stephanie Boughen, Courtney Gumbley, Mardi Jenkins, Kim Thornpson, Elise Denman, Tegan Burgess, Jessica Mitchelland HeIen North. BGGS was undefeated in the competition and once again clinched the title of champion water polo school in Queensland. As the season drew to a close and Finals Fever was in the air, a breakfast was held to build on the excitement of the challenges ahead. For the first time ever, all eleven Grammar teams reached the semifinals. This meant that every team was placed in the top four positions of their respective divisions. The high placing of the teams truly demonstrates the depth, talent and commitment of all players. Many teams were in close contention for a position in the Grand Finals. Four teams - the U13As, the U15Bs, the U16As and the U18As - won their semi final and competed in the Grand Finals on 8 April2000. The atmosphere on this day was truly electric with a huge amount of supporters decked out in royal blue cheering throughout the whole day. Not only did this spur on our own teams, but it proved to be very intimidating for the opposition. Two teams - the U13As and the U15Bs - took their success to a higher level by winning their age premiership. The annual water polo dinner held at the Carlton Crest concluded a most memorable and successful season.
Picture this: a swimmer with good technique and endurance. Add a footballer (soccer variety) who can dribble the ball and pass and shoot with pinpoint accuracy. Toss in a rugby player's bullish ability to charge through packs and, regardless of injury risk, come out with the ball. Shake it all about (and don't forget to add water), and there you have it a water polo player. In the 1999/2000 season there were 130 BGGS water polo players with the afore mentioned qualities. These qualities, along with great fighting spirit and unique camaraderie produced a winning combination for a very successful season. The season was particularly significant for BGGS water polo as it was the 25th anniversary of water polo being played at the school. The start of the season saw the addition of our new recruits - twenty-six Year 75 - who joined the Grammar team and took part in the Saturday ritual of water polo games at the Valley Pool. The first event in the busy social calendar of the season was the Welcome BBQ held at Centenary Pool. The BBQ allowed parents and players to meet and mingle and provided an opportunity to rekindle the unique Grammar spirit. At the BGGS Expo, the Club held a water polo stall which consisted of a photo display, raffles and the very popular Rainbow Smash Slurpees. The end of the first half of the season marked the departure of our teacherin-charge, Mrs Peta Richardson. A surprise farewell get-together recognised Mrs Richardson's contribution to water polo and welcomed aboard Mrs Chris Moore as the new coordinator.
