club sport

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games saw a momentous inclusion for women's sport in general, and BGGS, in particular. Water Polo has been a major club sport in our coinpetitiv calendar since 1976 and the school has produced ten international players, including an Australian captain in Deborah Handley- Cuminins. This year two past Grammar girls, Nikita Cuffe and Julia Flaskas, werein the squad from which the Olympic team was selected. This sport, like all club sport, has provided extra opportunities for girls to develop and mature, as well as excel. Sailing also has provided a forum for both the social sailor and the elite participant with Ann Patterson representing Australia with her siste Julia, this year. Sarah Roberts-Thornson, captain of sailing 1996 and 1997, officiated in Sydney at the Sailing having missed out on selection. Instead of being disappointed, Sarah decided to volunteer to learn as much as possible for 2004. This is what Grammar girls and Olympians are made of! Club sport offers many elite success stories, Kate Clarkson offered a QAS rowing scholarship, Lindsay MCGrath representing Australia at the Junior Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in August this year, Jusveer Rakhra selected in the Queensland Schoolgirls U18 Cricket team and Louise Hogarth, 1999 State Junior Equestrian Champion. However, is the athletes who make up the teams and club groups around these girls who are our real success story.
