As in previous years, the University of Queensland meets held on Friday evenings provided an opportunity for all School squad members to compete against rival schools, whilst encouraging the athletes to strive for personal best performances. This year, each meet was assigned a different colour and BGGS athletes received hair ribbons of corresponding colour to wear. Hence, the series of five meets became known as "The Rainbow Meets"in which each athlete embarked upon a 'rainbow of performances'- and hopefully also found a pot of gold to reward them for their efforts! Training continued throughout the September vacation, with some sessionsin the second week being held at the UQ facility. Whilst these sessions allowed the athletes to acclimatise to the heat and sun that invariably characterises the QGSSSA Athletics Competition, they also gave witness to the inaugural squad picnic. With 'water-fight- worthy' iced water, the healthy chicken and salad (and the not-so-healthy chocolate mud cake!), the morning was enjoyed by all girls, and certainly satisfied their ravenous appetites

With school resuming came a flood of competitions that served to prepare the Squad for the QGSSSA competition. Some members of the squad competed in four meets throughout the first week of term. Despite the sprinklings of rain and thunderclouds that loomed over the western stand of QEll early on Friday morning, we really couldn't have asked for better conditions for the 2000 QGSSSA Athletics Championships. The sun chased away the bad weather before serious competition got under way, and the athletes were able to enjoy the day for which they had spent so much time and energy preparing! Every Grammar girl who competed on Friday 13 October is to be coinmended for the way in which she got out there and gave it her best shot. There were so many outstanding performances throughout the day ... it just goes to show that hard training will ALWAYS pay off! But we'd particularly like to extend our congratulations to the five Grammar athletes who smashed longstanding QGSSSA records. In the thirteen year age group, the pocket dynamo, Kate Lenth, ran a tremendous loom, with a new record of 1274 seconds. In the 14 years, Tamazyn Kettleton threw 898 metres in shot put. Tamazyn has been training so hard this season, and it was great to see her efforts rewarded. In the 15 years was Leah Rickards with a new Long Jump record of 486 metres, and An it a Farmer with a 90 metres hurdles record of 1393 seconds. Sophie Cameron, with an outstanding run in the 800m created the new record of 2 minutes 2795 seconds in the 16 years' As in past years, the relays at the end of the day provided great excitement, both for the competitors and the spectators. This year, we had particular success, with allten of our relay teams " being placed in the first three. The relays not only contribute significantly to the overall points total a for our school, but they also give an indication of the team's depth of talent. This depth enabled 8 the team to place third (778 points) behind Brisbane State High and Moreton Bay College. in D o ^ FF 61 N a
