VOLLEYBALL
The 2000 GrammarVolleybaliseason has once again proven to be very enjoyable for everyone involved. The sport continued to grow throughout 2000 with the addition of a separate Year 10 team and a subsequent record number sixtytwo girls representing the School in the sport. Due to the changing of holiday dates, the season began in term two and concluded in third term. The GrammarVolleyballers experienced not only QGSSSA competition, but also many girls were given the opportunity to play at the annual Queensland Schools Cup or play representative volleyball at regional and/or state levels. After a successful Interhouse Volleyball Competition in the early stages of term two, the Year 8 team had over eighty girls trailing for a position in a team of twelve. The girls selected for the team showed not only great skill, but also the enthusiasm and spirit GrammarVolleyballengenders. Coached by Alexandra Downs, last year's volleyball captain, the girls improved steadily, and despite a very narrow defeat in the initial game, the girls finished the season in equal first place. Laura Kidd and Claire Howard must both be coinmended for their exceptional serving throughout the season.

Coached by Makia Waters, the Year 9 team had a remarkable season, successfully defending their Grade 8 premiership of 1999 to drop only a single set in the entire competition. The team fonded off their major rivals, Brisbane State High, to win 3-0. The girls competed consistently, never dropping their standard of play. Kirby Short's magnificent serving was a definite highlight. On one occasion, she managed to serve a complete set to win 25-0. The spirited Year I O team, coached by Jayde Tilney showed enthusiasm throughout the season finishing seventh. Shehara Mendis' consistency was an attribute to the team, with the competition being highlighted by their winning of the third set against Brisbane State High. This year group was a new division created in the QGSSSA competition in 2000, and presented a great opportunity for the girls to gain extra confidence and skill before entering the senior teams While many of the girls, selected for the Senior B team had never played a game of volleyball before the trials, they did exceptionally well, finishing the season in equal second place under the coaching of Belinda Deal. Congratulations goes to Gemldine Wright for her powerful and consistent serving during the season. The Senior A team improved their placing of second in 1999, and became the QGSSSA Premiers under the coaching of Belinda Haynes, remaining undefeated throughout the season. All girls played superbly during the season, with Nickie-Lee Hew and Lauren Goode both illustrating the talent of the Senior A team Despite a change of coach midway through the season, the Open team continued to show wonderful leadership throughout the year. With five of the nine players new to the Open team, it did not take long for the girls to form a strong bond. The motivational coaching from Mr Ron Mackay and consistently strong performances from all players enabled the team to finish in second place. The placing was made possible by the aggressive spiking of Amelia Kerlin, Annabelle Lamprecht and rookie, Elizabeth MCLellan, the solid setting of Deborah Waters, Victoria Ling and Lucy Haynes, inspiring blocking from Jasmine Yarbrough and consistency and support of our two other rookies, Samantha Bonning and Kate MCKennariey.
