Eventually the attention was brought away from the escaping convict, to Sarah s relief; as they thought she would be eaten by sharks, and she swam more and more confidently to the shore, surprised that nothing seemed to be harming her. When she was on shore, she kissed the sand happily glad and amazed that she had made her way to shore, then timidly made her way through sand-shrubs and mangroves. When she had walked a long way, she heard leaves rustle in front of her and froze. Some branches in front of her parted, revealing a boy about her age, one she had never known existed. He had dark skin, kind, dark eyes, and he wore nothing but a small cloth in between his legs and carried a spear. He smiled at her and she drew back frightened. He held out a small dark hand and she stared at it. She thought for a moment about his offer of friendship. He was a savage, one of the many reported back in England to be the primitive inhabitants of New Holland. Was this what England had wanted her to do? Befriend the dark men in this strange new world? Would her decision change the lives of the people in two hundred years when the world turned into the next thousand, if that would happen? Her mind knew that somehow dark man and white girl should be friends, and smiled as she took his hand. She looked into his dancing eyes and saw thousands of years of adventures and wisdom, and knew right then that when the world turned to the next thousand, that white man would still love brown man. He led her away into the bush, to his home, and she never saw the dark nights and cold days again.
