Once again, the Intraschool tennis competition was ITeld to determine the 1998 school tennis champion. The aoe champi- ons were: June Sze (8), Sidney Cubasch (9), Jane Boulton (10), Shona Mumian (11) and SamanthaJames (12). it was Sidney Cubasch, however. who was named the 1998 school tennis champion after defeating Shona Millman in a tough finals match The talent of these girls is extraordinary and they should be congratulated on their wonderful efforts 11 was definitely game, set and match to Grammar tennis in 1998. Our style, fom\ and talent were impeccable. We had the determination to win - and we did it The friendly Inter house ATHLETICS Competition at the Anglican Chtirch Grammar School on 15" August was a fitting start to the Track and Field season. The day had a pleasant atmosphere with all girls showing strong support of their team- mates and a positive attitude to competing. Strong perform- an CGs from members of the Liney House earned them the individual Events Cup and Athletics Challenoe Cup, while Gibson performed well to win The Enoland Cup for Relays and finished second overall The talent of athletes in a range of Houses was demonstrated by the outstanding performances by Frances Bam (13 years England), Emity Baker (14 years Mackay), Sara KendaU <15 years England), Satah Estwick <16 years Lilley) and Sarah Bitomsky <17 years Griffith), who all received the award of Aoe Group Champion. The prize of Overall Champion athlete was awarded 10 Frances Bam who competed at a very hioh standard in track and field events. A new trophy was created this year that features the gilded spike running shoes of Mrs Daphne Pille A former student of BGGS, Mrs Pine reached Australian represen- tanon in Athletics and Hockey, and has maintained her passion for sport. gained at BCGS, throughout her life. in her earlier days of involvement in Athletics, she wore the spikes, now adorning the trophy, in a race against the well-known AListralian athlete, Shiney SIrickland A new PIOgrain of competition meets was introduced this year which provided us with the opportunity to compete at the new University of Queensland tartanirack every Friday evening Grammar incorporated these meets, and the annLial Glennie and Morelon Bay meets, in its pre-season preparation. These meets gave us a chance to display our team spirit, develop a competitive edge and provided great motivation for athletes Ginbai'king on a successful season The standard of competition conrinued with the Metropoli- tan North regional championships on 17'" September at ANZ track This coinpetitioiT proved 10 be a success with 16 of oui runners selected in the regional team to compete in the Stale Titles. This was an excellent OPPorttinity for the team 10 test their capabilities and practise against strong competition for the Lipcoming QGSSSA competition

After weeks of training, the Grammar athletics team demon- sitared the benefit of a strong Athletics proofam to become premiers for the fourth year in a row at the QGSSSA Athletics competition, held on Friday 16th October. The fantastic cheering by BGGS spectators encouraged some outstandino perform- ances from the athletes, who competed with enthusiasm and strong team spirit On the day, the thirteen years girls, bravely faced the boisterous atmosphere of their first QG Carnival to win their age-group pennant. The 16 years and 17 years girls also won their age-group but it was the team as a whole which won the competition, with very strong performances in all age-groups Frances Bam 13 years (8E) won a hat trick of individual events (loom, Zoom and 400m) and anchored a winning A relay Satah Estwick obtained two first places (high jump and long jump) and a second place (javelin) in the 16 years age group Gcordie Shannon <8L) who began throwing javelin for The first time at the beginning of the season, set a new record distance of 35.20m. and her improvement during the season earned her the 1
