hey were her two best friends. Not all that different from today, I suppose. One with her fiery confidence, the other timid, yet drunk on power when paired with the first. The little group was inseparable. Of course, when they had to form pairs in class, she was always the leftover, but only because she was always too slow to grab someone she knew. Otherwise, they were always together. in class they gossiped. Afterwards, they would go to the senior school and wait for the afternoon bus They were big girls, until they reached the older school. They made their way, looking with envy and longing and careless anticipation, through an even bigger sea of green. When they reached the square of open grass they played together, filling

They didn't really want anything from her, she knew that And so she let them take her purse, gave them sugary caramels before they could ask, and crouched on all fours before they could throw them into the grass, waiting to gather them again She didn't speak - that was part of the game. And after all, they were her two best friends They give her respect now. But they still push her. They let her speak, give her a podium, tell her they want to hear. But she is afraid now. She is smarter than before. She pulls her sweet thoughts closer to her, for the grass is longer now and the square has grown with each year. They want her to play a different

game. They make her the leader, so that she may direct others, But she is still playing the first. They believe in her more than she does. So she speaks And says nothing at all
