CHRISTA DAVIES

C hrista Davies, guest speaker at this year's Speech Day, is one of Gram- mar's truly exceptional 'old girls'. After win- ning the 1994 Caltex National Scholarship for Women and a Fullbright Scholarship, Christa commenced her MBA at Harvard in 1995 completing it this year. While at Ha1vard, she studied many technology related sub- jects and worked for a cable television company in London during her vacation. Christa completed her senior year at BGGS in 1988. During her years at Grammar, · she won numerous academic prizes and participated in many extra-curricular activi- ties. Christa represented the school in A- Grade swimming, artistic gymnastics and played the clarinet in the school orchestra

first class honours . She then received the James Dowrie Prize for achieving the highest results in the year. Following this, Christa was offered a CRA Scholarship to undertake a PhD in fractal geomet1y. When told she could not combine her engineering course with the study of Japanese, she travelled to Japan in her university holidays to teach English, as a means of honing her Japanese skills. Christa is now working for Microsoft's new joint venture in Australia, 9MSN, where she is responsible for developing an internet news se1vice. Christa became interested in the internet becau.se of the exciting develop- ments in this field and the large number of talented people it attracted. Also, as it is a

new area, it presents great opportunities for women to take management positions. Christa is now looking forward to her involvement in the development of the new multimedia indust1y in Australia.

JACQUELINE PEEL

W hile Jacqueline Peel attended Girls Grammar she distinguished herself a · a student who was capable of achieving at the highest level. In 1991, her final year at Grammar, Jacqueline was a prefect She was lhe winner of a Silver Medal in the National La lin Exam and received the Senior Latin Pri ze and a prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement on Speech Day.Therefore, when Jacqueline began her Bachelor of Law/ Sci- ence in 1992 the school community realised that her university career would be full of accomplishments. The extent of this accomplishment, how- ever, still managed to surprise. This was so because Jacqueline achieved the highest ever gradepoint average in the histo1y of the

Jacqueline attributes a great deal of her successes at university to the skills she learnt at Grammar. Specifically, she was affected by the strong emphasis on academic achieve- ment, the discipline and organisation which was encouraged, and the idea that there were no limits to what you could achieve, both at school and in the wider community. She remembers the school as a place where "eve1y student was encouraged to achieve" and she regards that as "something which is important and which has the ability to make a positive difference to a person's perspec- tive once she leaves school". Having completed her degree last year, Jacqueline is now interested in a career in

She was awarded several other prizes throughout her studies: the Walter Harrison Prize, the McCullough Robertson Prize, the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association Prize in Natural Resources Law, and the Corrs Chambers Westgarth Prize.
