The next day the annual end of season lunch was held at Wanganui Gardens with guest speaker Denise Cooper, Austral- ian Kayaking champion and Olympian, and proved to be a great end to a hard-working season for all those involved. The State Championships were held at Wivenhoe Dam on 20th and 21st September where twelve of our crews competed. We finished with two first placings including the First Eight and the Under 15 Coxed Quad, two seconds (the Coxed Four and Under 15 Double), two third placings (Under 16 Coxed Four and Under 15 Single scull), three fifth placings (Open Four, Under 16 Double and the Under 15 Coxed Quad), a sixth from our Open Schoolgirl Double and two seventh placings (Under 16 Single scull and the Under 16 Coxed Quad). These results were hard fought and well earned. The First Eight win was particularly sweet as most of the schools at the "Head of the River" were in attendance. Alice Wehl and
These riders acquitted themselves superbly with Annabelle Casey receiving Champion Hack, Reserve Champion Senior Rider and Supreme Champion hack of 1997, Genevieve Casey named as reserve Champion Galloway and Champion Senior Rider, Emily Case named as Champion Junior Rider, Champion Galloway and Supreme Champion Rider of 1997, and Peta Johnson and Olivia Meadows placing equal third Junior Rider. This has been an exceptional year in terms of the number of FENCERS at BGGS as well as serious participation in competitions. Fencing recruitment began early in the year with about 22 fencers registered. It has been most heartening that for the first time, there has been a core of serious fencers who have consistently turned up for training and competitions all year. Under the guidance of coach Andrew Harcourt, BGGS fencers met eve1y Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for training. Performances by our fencers have been excellent this year. The Brisbane Girls Grammar Team A of Tashen D1·omey, Lindsay McGrath and Sophie Ferris beat the Brisbane Boys Grammar School TeamAand Team B, and Moreton Bay College in the finals to win the 1997 Queensland Schools Fencing Championships. The same BGGS team went on to represent Queensland in the 1997 Australian Schools Fencing Champion- ships finishing fourth in the schoolgirls teams. The highlight of the fencing calendar was the Australian National U15 and U17 Fencing Championships held at St Peters in July. Six BGGS fencers competed with outstanding perform- ances by Tashen Dromey (1st in Ul 7Women's Epee, 3rd in Ul 7 Women's Foil and 3rd in Australian Individual Schoolgirls) and a first class effort by Lindsay McGrath who at 13 years old and in her first nationals made the finals coming 6th in the U15 Women's Foil. Other BGGS participants in the Age Nationals were Alex Gillies, Sophie Ferris, Pip McGrath and Rhiannon Mulherin. In the teams foil events, Tashen Dromey and Alex Gillies represented Queensland in the Ul 7 State team and Lindsay McGrath and Sophie Ferris in the U15 State team. In the local Schoolies competition and State Age competi- tions, BGGS fencers also did well with Lindsay McGrath, Sophie Ferris and Pip McGrath finishing in the top third and fourth placings in a number of tournaments throughout the year.
Kathryn Fletcher competed in the Aus- tralian National Row- ing Championships at Lake Barrington in Tasmania earlier this year. Congratulations to both girls for their excellent results. For the EQUES-
TRIAN team, this year has been one of su- perlatives. In Dres- sage and Hacking, we have had a record number of girls com- peting in our colours, and a record number of competitors in State Finals in all disciplines. During the September holidays the following girls competed in the State Finals:
