against tough competition this season with many girls making their debut in senior hockey. Kath Barram andJuliaElse both had consistent seasons and should be commended for their commitment and contribution to the team's fourth placing. The C Grade competition stepped up a level this season as many close, hard games were fought. Kellie Emerson had an outstanding season in fullback. This team showed the fun involved in Hockey and displayed an amazing amount of spirit throughout the season. Due to the abundance of draws, Cgrade came equal second with St Margarets. OurJuniors also had a hard competitive season placing third which is encouraging for Grammar Hockey's future . Sarah DoolanNicholson had an outstanding season playing consist- ently well.
Representative honours went to Jane Morgan who was her selection in the Metropolitan East 1 team and named in the top sixteen in Queensland for her age group - under fifteen. On the completion of the season, Jane was selected in a "train-on" state U18 squad and we wish her luck in its final selection in 1998. NETBALL is one of the largest and most competitive sports Grammar has to offer. With ten teams competing in the QGSSSA competition this year, our results reflect our effort and achieve- ment. The season began with the Year 8 Interhouse Netball competition, which gave an insight into the enthusiasm, success and participation which was BGGS Netball in 1997. Early trials this season gave us an added advantage of extensive training before the commencement of the Winter Fixture season. The Grammar Netball results are truly rewarding when considering the highly competitive nature of Netball in Queens- land. The new Year 8s proved to be a true asset to the school and were well placed in the competition. Both the 8Cs and the 8Bs achieved second to Moreton Bay College and St Peters respectively. The 8As performed well in a highly competitive season. The 9C team also finished in second place and both the 9As and 9Bs finished strongly after a long season. The strength and commitment of the Senior girls can easily be seen in the results for the Open division. D Grade finished second to St Peters after an exciting game, being defeated 41 - 34. C Grade were Grammar's undefeated champions for 1997, and as a team they played cohesively and with determination throughout. Both the A Grade and B Grade finished second Anglican Church Gram- mar School. It was won- derful to see Lilley House win the Indi- vidual Events Cup and the Athletics Challenge Cup, for the first time in fourteen years. They were closely followed by Gibson House, who also gained first place in the Medley Relay, thus winning the Bachmann Cup. The England Cup for relays was won by Woolcock House. ---------------------154--------------------- losing only to St Peters in two highly aggressive and competitive matches . The new look Grammar Mazda Cup Team which consisted of Captains Alexandra Moles and Kate Miller, Jade Giles, Debbie Lauritz, Jessica Haynes, Fiona Manning, Clare Burgess, Suzanna Nisbet-Smith, Hannah Bishop, Sarah Estwick, Jane Menzies and Katherine Quinn, added to the successful season by taking out the Queensland Secondary Schools Netball Competition at the State finals in early Septem- ber. Since its inception six years ago, this is our best result, and one better than the 1996 results . This placed Grammar number one out of a participating 239 teams which competed through- out the state . Kate Miller finished a most successful season being named Defender of the Finals and Player of the Series by Australian Netball Captain and Mazda Cup coordinator, Vicki Wilson. Kate was also selected in the Queensland Ul9 Team which com- peted in Canberra. Our other senior representative was Jessica Haynes who was selected in the Open Metropolitan East Regional Team which competed in Townsville at the State Secondary School- girls' Championships.
