hospitable and took us in as another daughter. Each family also gave up their whole weekend to take us sight-seeing around Shanghai. They cared for us very well and were always concerned that if we didn't eat enough we would go home too thin! Our worries about being able to communicate were soon forgotten as our host sisters could speak almost fluent English and our Chinese was good enough to be able to communicate. By the end of the trip we had all acquired many attributes : we were bilingual, experts with chopsticks, experts at avoiding bikes, experts in Chinese hist01y and culture and this was all thanks to Mr Lam.

During the ten days, we attended school at Shanghai No. 3 Girls' Middle School. The classes were English, Histo1y, Chi- nese, Physics, Calligraphy, Stone ca1ving & Flower arranging. In most classes we could undei;stand the majority of what was being said even if it was through hand movements but I personally found Physics extremely hard seeing as though I can't even do it in English! We found quite a few differences in the school, two of the major ones being the morning exercises (including a jog) and eye exercises in the middle of the day. We were also lucky enough to visit many places around Shanghai as a group. These included the Da Guan Yuan, Yu Yuan gardens and the Jade Buddha temple. We also travelled to a nearby town called Wuxi for two days. All of us became great friends with our host sisters and also with each other. Going to China was a fantastic OPPORTUNITY for eve1yone and it was like nothing we had ever done nor probably will ever again experience. They were probably ten of the most challenging yet enjoyable days of our lives. We would like to thank Mr Lam most sincerely. He was our mother, father, tour guide and interpreter. We would also like to thank Mrs Thornquist for making this amazing trip possible and Ms Hennessey and Mrs Fogarty for accompanying us. ALANA FRASER
