CANOEING THE NOOSA RIVER Over 50km in canoes, rain and sunshine, pit toilets and heaps of fun: these words describe briefly the way that three Grade I Is, Mrs Lanham, two canoes and four waterproof drums containing as many of our possessions as would fit, spent the first week of the September holidays. Grade I I Canoeing Camp involved canoeing down the Noosa River, source to
leading research and design scientists and engineers. Having the opportunity to try the night simulators actually used in trainino by the NASA astronauts was a once-in-a-life-lime experience. Over the eight day camp, three separate tracks - Aerospace, Engineering and Technology - were offered. All three tracks underwent separate training, enabling us to learn the basis of flying, living and working in space. The diversity of all three courses included activities from scubadiving to simulated moon walking. A1 the end of the week depending on which track we chose we took up positions for the climax of our training, a twelve hour mission. The feeling of confi- dence in each other clearly showed in the close teamwork necessary for success. The simulators used were so effective that it was easy to realise the difficulties of coping with life threatening situations.

Sarah Dancer canoeing in style
On Monday we launched our canoes in the red/brown water of the upper Noosa River. Although coloured by draining through land covered with Ii-trees. the water was still clean and fresh. Tuesday we canoed upstream as far as we could safely go 10 discover the true beauty of the upper Noosa River. The reflections are almost minor perfect in the very calm water. All peaceful and undisturbed, it was just the atmosphere we needed in the first few days of OUT camp

Christinc O'Neill with the catch of the day! Wednesday started with a walk to the Cooloolah Sandpaich This is the top of a mountain which has been covered by sand blown up from the beach. The views were great and we had a chance 10 track our journey. By the end of our paddle on Wednesday we were approaching salt water.
