All members of the Girls' Grammar family heartily con- ,ratulate Elsina Wainwrighi on becoming Girls' Grammar's second Rhodes Scholar. Dr Elizabeth Woods was the first female Australian Rhodes Scholar, winning :his high honour in 1976 and Elsina becomes a most fitting recipient of this second honour to the School. BISina was enrolled at Brisbane Girls' Grammar School from 1984 until 1988 when she was elected Head Girl and Captain of Debating. After leaving school, she enrolled in Law at the University of Queensland. During her first year it university, she was elected as a First Year Representative in the University of Queensland Law School Department al Consultative Committee, a staff/student liaison body. At he beginning of 1993, she became the Vice-president of he T C Bejine School of Law, Secretary of the University it Queensland Debating Society and Convenor of the University of Queensland World Invitation al Debating Tournament. While at school Elsina enjoyed participating in a variety of ICtivities and represented the school in both tennis and
hockey, as well as playing an active part in music and debating. She enjoyed the responsibilities she had and in her final year was awarded the Ida Woolcock Challenge Cup as the student with the best public spirit. As Elsina states, "School imbued me with a desire to learn and to pursue academic excellence. " Earlier this year, Elsina visited Oxford while competing in the World Debating Championships and found the expert- ence to be intellectually stimulating and challenging. While at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, she hopes to under- take a Master of Philosophy in International Relations. Elsina has already studied Comparative Law and is presently studying International Law within her Law Degree and believes that a Master of Philosophy would help her to pursue her interest in International Relations. Her particular interests are in relation to the international relations of East Asia and South Asia and Australia's POSi- tion within the South-East Asia network. We extend all good wishes to Elsina on achieving this very high academic honour.
