OBITUARY Betty Grulke Brisbane Girls' Grammar School noted with sadness the death of former Head Girl (1945) Belly Grulke (nee Pledger) on September 25, this year. The Pledger family, and daughters Phyllis, a Prefect in 1943, NGll (Mrs Garth Quartermaine) and Leone (Mrs Norman What!ey), Head Girl 1951, were very much a part of the school community, especially in the field of sport. Belly was Captain of the A Netball Team in 1945. After leaving BC. G. S. Belly Pledger trained as a Primary School Teacher and taught at Palmwoods and Thornlands. She always showed special skills in Craft work and was invited back to lecture in Textile Arts at KGlvin Grove Teachers College, a position she held foi' forty years. Belly won recognition as one of Brisbane's most distinouished textile weavers. SITe belonged to the Spinners, Weavers and Dyers Group and also the Dozen Weavei's Group that exhibited frequently at the City Hall. At her Wynnum studio she taught pottery, paintino and textile weaving and also conducted workshops throughout Queensland. Afte^ the death of her husband, Belly and her sister Phyllis loved to travel. Earl this year they trekked to Nepal. "In September we decided to explore the F1inders Ranges and Wilpena Pound, " Phyllis told me, "and it was here Betty died suddenl , doing what she liked best. " '
