DEBATINC AND PUBLIC SPEAKING Do you feel sick at the thought of speaking in front of people? Well, so do we! But even so 1989 has been another very successful year for all who have withstood the pressure. The school has entered three debating competitions - Circult, Apex and Q.D.U. - and numerous public speaking contests. Of the five teams entered in Apex, the Year 8 (E) team defeated All Hallows in the Crand Final. Congratulations to the team. ln the Q.D.U. competition, all teams have once again done extremely well. The Senior A, Junior A(1 ), Junior B(1 ) and junior B(2) teams have qualified for the knock-out rounds of finals to be held in Term 4. Each year trials are held to choose speakers for a Queensland Team. This year over sixty senior students applied, and Ainslie Barron and Erica Fryberg successfully reached the final 24 in Queensland. Much worthwhile experience is gained from trying out so, future debaters, give it a go! lnterhouse debates will be held in Term 4; lntra-school competitions open debating to girls not necessarily in school teams. Debating shouldn't become an elitist activity, but there ought to be the option, for anyone who wishes to compete at their own level. A couple of social barbecues

have been held with B.C.S. deLraters. On School Day both schools' Senior A teams mixed speakers to give an lmpromptu demonstration debate where it was shown that "being lively is better than being lovely". B.C.C.S. has had entrants in a huge variety of public speaking competitions this year: Lions Prudential Youth of the Year Quest (Diana Lohrisch and Nicole Bigby), Quota "Student of the Year" (Rachel Balmanno and Samantha Clarke), Ten Network Junior Newsreader (Catherine Silcock), Plain English Speaking (Erica Fryberg), Jaycee's Youth Speaks for Australia (where Kirsten Pietzner reached the Pacific Region final) and Rostrum (Junior: Leith McPherson and Belinda Luton, Senior: Ainslie Barron and Sarah Martin). Sarah is to be congratulated on winning her section. Closer to home is the Merle Weaver Annual lnterhouse Competition. Amanda Love (-l 0E) won the Junior division, and the Senior competition is to be held in Term 4. There has been a very enthusiastic response to it. Twelve entrants will take part in the competition. Doubtless, all speakers will excel themselves as Crammar Cirls have tended to do all year. Debaters and speakers may seem cool and confident, but often are quaking inside. The success we have had this year
