ATHENE The Athene Club, an association of students in Crades Eleven and Twelve from both Crammar Schools, has been extremely successful in '1 989. There have been a record number of meetings with papers prepared and presented by club members. The Club began the year with a formal dinner, after which Spencer Toombes presented a paper on Evolution v. Creation. Other papers given to date have spanned a wide range of topics: Manners (Ainslie Barron), Drugs (Phil Hoffmann), Suicide (Kirsten Pietzner), Rock Videos (Lachlan Davidson), Abortion (Pip Boyce), Martyrdom (Erica Fryberg), Mu lticu ltu ral is m (Peter Walters), Education (Margot Cowen, Brent Dunn), Euthanasia (Kim Skubris) and Democracy (Michael Teufel). Hopefully a collection of the papers in book form will be organised by the end of the year.

Ihe Club has also held more informal quiz nights, and other social functions. lt hopes to contact the club's patron, Justice Dowsett, to address members before the next holidays. The major objective of Athene, according to the club's constitution, is to "provide a forum where students can go further in the pursuit of intellectual development than is available in the normal classroom situation". This has certainly been achieved, and the many grade twelves, who leave the club this year have (hopefully!) not only broadened their knowledge through discussion, but realised the value of listening to other people's opinions. I wish next year's Athene Club members as much enjoyment and success as we have had. Erica Fryberg President.
