1984 School Magazine

TIBRARY REPORT 1gB4 or 1983 B as we prefer to call it in utterly superstitious recognition of George Orwell, began with a fairly major change in the organizational structure of the media monitor group. The seniors staged a coup, which resulted in the formation of the'Library Committee Committee'. This group of all senior media monitors works in conjunction with the two library secretaries and so far has been very SucCeSSful. On the evening of the 14th of June, we emerged from the shelves looking decidedly extraterrestrial, plastered with red and yellow spots (red = short stor!, yellow = science fiction) and strips of contact after a gruelling session of covering, tidyitrB, shuffling and stowing books. The practical outcome of our exertions was the creation of a separate fiction section for short stories. This was followed by a supper of pizza, fruit and 'yutmies'. Th€h, aS several of our number sprinted across to Boys'Crammar to participate in the music camp concert, the rest finished on a more relaxing note by watching the movie "Watership Down". Theh, only a few weeks latet, Qn a suspiciously normal Monday morning, assembly was ruthlessly wrenched from its blanket of lethargy. This assault was made, to everyone'S amazement, by ou r pref ect groU P, who were in fact doing a spot of advertising for the library. Justine Nutting becaffi€, figuratively speaking, a "peace egg" and, with a jingle that no promotion company could better, called for support for the peace egg drive. The goal of allthis was Grammar's annual contribution to the Chelsea Flower Show, in the form of a global village of "egg people" f rom the many different nationalities. This display, however, had a dual purpose. The last week in August was devoted to the theme of "symbiosis" and displays such as the global village were typical aspects of the library's presentation. Thanks must go to those who contributed their time and effort to the models, posters and other displays. After many interrelated events, such as 'peace' assembly, the week culminated in a syrnposium involving representatives f rom a variety of Brisbane Schools on the topic of Symbiosis. From the beginning of the year, the western wing was inundated by a plague of f rogs. RIBIT posters appeared around the school in epidemic quantities. The Read ln Bed, lt's Terrific project has been so successful that a second Grade B fortnightly borrowing book was needed by the beginning of the second semester. This entnusiasm has coloured all our activities this year and we are gratef u I to everyone f or their su pport. Thanks go to Mrs. Riggs, Mrs. Richardson, Mrs. Peterson, Mr. Rowell, Mr. Hughes, all the members of the Committee Committee, €specially Megan Huppert, the sub-senior media monitors and everyone who has contributed to the library this year. DUKE OF EDINBURGH REPORT Numerous girls saw the advantage of learning how to survive in all types of situations and joined the D. of E. Award Scheme at Crammar this year. This isn't an ordi- nary type of club because most of the work towards gainins a Bro nze, Silver or Gold level is done outside of school on an individual basis. School instead acts as a co-ordinator for community service, training camps and expeditions. lan Hughes, Mrs. Statham and many other staff offer their time to assist girls in reaching these awards, giving guidance and advice above and beyond the call of duty. By doing this they have ensured that everyone participating in the D. of E. Scheme has a great time, as well as gaining the satisfaction of accomplishing something new, different and difficult. D. of E. helps you to do something of use both f or you rself and others, by teach ing you skills in communicatioh, self-development, Community invol- vement, physical recreation and appreciation of self, others and surroundings. This scheme has a lot to offer, but you can't benefit unless you participate. So come along and join the club. We guarantee you'll have the experience of a life-tiffi€, while gaining a worthwhile award.
