1983 School Magazine
TX{E tsACKGAMII{@N CLUB REFORT The Eackgammon Club had a slow but sure start at the beginning of the school year. This is the Club's first year in existence. Every Friday lunchtirne we gathered together in F{32 over backgammon sets to have some friendly discussions and listen to Radio Faw Paw. On School Day we held a minature Backgammon Tournament with eight peopie competing for the prize of a rather large lolly-pop. Those bitten by the backgammon bug can become really intent on playing. Backgammon is a game based not only on the luck of the dice but practised moves to bring the downfall of your opponent with the possibility of a gammon or an even harder backgammon. Mdny thanks go to N4rs. Riggs for providing the school with three desperately needed backgamlnon sets. These are in demand every lunchtime. Through club subscriptions. the Backgammon Club has been able to scrape together enough money to buy extra sets. These will be donated to the library for all to use in their spare time . . . ZEI{ITF{ CT-UE REPORT 1983 has been an extremely exciting year{or members of the Zenith Club (nee Toastmistress!). Early in the year we became an official club, associated with International Toastmistress Clubs, and sponsored by Mt. Gravatt Club. Then on July l5th we held a charter meeting with parents and friends of members attending. The evening was very enjoyable, the highlights being the speaking programme itself, the FOOD served afterwards, and, of course, Mrs. Kiolle's wonderful cake, decorated with the Zenith logo. On School Day we held a demonstration meeting with the theme "The Rhythm of Life", another success. Altogether this year has been very exciting for us, and we hope that all of you budding school leaders, as well as those of you who tremble at the thought of English Orals, will join the club next year, and discover that you can speak in public and have fun too! Thanks go to Mrs. Riggs, Mrs. Kiolle, Miss Burrows and Mrs. Deasy from Mt. Gravatt Club, for their continuing support. Best wishes for next year. Claire Wrighton (President)

LEUKEMIA COMMITTEE RBPORT This year the Leukemia Committee has been involved in such fundraising activities as selling cold drinks on Interhouse Swimming day; selling cakes to the teachers; holding a very successful sweet stall; selling B.G.G.S. screen-printed tea towels, which are still available; and raffling last year's and this year's Mary Williams screen- prints donated by the Jack family. On behalf of the committee I would like to extend special thanks to Mrs. Hukins, Mrs. Thomas, and to the Parents and Friends Association, especially for their $50.00 donation. Kylie Elkington and Laura McDonald
