1982 BGGS Magazine
LEUKEMIA ASSOCIATION REPORT September, 1982 This year the Leukemia Association set out determined to do better than last year, in which little was accomplished. A screen print of the School was donated by an Artist, Mary Williams, also an Old Gir l of the School. This started our year's fund raising activities, and was raffled towards the end of the first semester. We also had a wonderful time seeing Clare Florence again, when she returned to Brisbane for a holiday from Melbourne. As founder of our Association she was a welcome sight and popped back again on the Inter-House Athletics Day to help us sell ice cones. Many thanks must go to all who have helped in these past activities, espeCially those who lent articles that were needed on the days. As yet, we still have great plans for further fundraising and hope to have a stall on School Day and an Informal Day in the fourth term. A second screen print is also being raffled and will be drawn at the end of the semester. This raffle is a view in Spring Hill by the same artist and donated once again by Mrs Jack, mother of Kirsten Jack, a B.G.G .S. student who died of leukemia in 1978. We also hope to make a bit more than the last raffle. Unfortunately, the response from the school has not been as good as we expected, but we are still keeping our heads above the water and hope people will support us. · A stall was set up on School Day in which printed tea towels of the School were sold for $4.00 each. We ordered 300 of them and hope to sell all by the end of the year. And finally, a reminder to all those dopey ignoramuses floating out there- if you are a Non -House-Group-Notice- reader, membership is open to ALL GRADES you lucky lot!! Claire Hockly and Penelope Buntine.
FIJIAN OPEN MENTAL ABILITIES TOURNAMENT
There was a strange mood of nervousness and excitement at Brisbane airport on August 28th. Miss Paterson and Ms Rant, accompanied by three conspicu9.us uniform-clad girls, Susan Lynch, Suzy Grice and I, )eft for the third Fijian Open Mental Abilities Tourname'f.i't.. This was the second year Girls' GrammaL had participated. After the girl~' successes last _year, we !fad a very high _standard to uphold . Our plane trip over was interesting as well as fun and we fell in love with Suva on arri'{al It was a very full week . The competition began on Mo.nday and finished on friday~ the bits in between were crammed with learning, asking, talking, trips into town, barte~ing ancr sight-seeing. . On the first day of the competition we were regarded with some apprehension receiving cautious stares and uncertain smiles. Soon curiousity got the better of most of the students and we made some very warm friends in the short space of the week. After a while everyone was interested in the "Brisbane Girls' ' · and :questions were fired at us. We were asked about school, teachers, hobbies (and why did Ms Rant have pens and knitting needles sticking out of her hair?) We in turn asked questions and learnt much from everyone. This year, a school which had not participated before, The International School, proved too strong and. BGGS were runners up overall. Individ!lally, Susan Lynch came first in Form One, Suzy Grice ~hird in Form Two and I came Second in Form Three. The competition covered a wide range of · subjects - Spelling, Historical, Religious, Geographical, Scientific and General Knowledge as well as various written tests including verbal . and mechanical reasoning, Maths, and General Mental Abilities. During our spare time we visited the University of the South Pacific, visited the beach, went on a picnic, explored the handicraft centre and market and· bartered with some very persuasive people. we·were fortunate enough to stay with the Prasad family who opened their home for us. We will always remember their kindness, hospitality and friendships. They introduced us to a very different and interesting way of life. We ate delicious curries, fruits, coconuts (chocolates) and much .more. On our last evening we had a !ova (a wonderful feast of chicken, vegetables, curries and many other delicacies). The tournament this year waf!i; not one of competing against others but joining in ancflearning with · them. Our entire trip was one of learning; sharing and experiencing new things. Sue, Suzy and I ·would like to add our very special thanks to Miss Paterson for helping and supporting us and to our coach Ms Rant. Her help and friendship were .some of the main reasons we had such a wonderful trip. Lexie Mooney lOW.
