CHESS CLUB The Chess Club consists of a small number of enthusiastic members who play at lunchtime on Fridays in E35. We also play inter-school competitions every second Friday, which means we improve our chess as well as meet students from other schools. So far we are doing well in the inter-school competitions. This year we were fortunate to have Diana Roberts join the club. Diana has provided us with lots of ideas, energy and . directi on. Other inter-school team members include Kerry Lintern, Caroline Turnour, Vanessa Golden and Helen Sargent. In March this year the club held a "Simultaneous" game when the Queensland Junior champion, Michael Forbes, visited the school and contested eight players at once. In less than half an hour he defeated us all. Also, in May, the Chess Club was visited by Mr Bill Leveritt who spoke about the history and the basic rules of the traditional Japanese game, Go. It was fascinating! Did you know that centuries ago, two Japanese warlords resolved their territorial claims by a Go contest? The victor won the land while the loser lost his head, quite literally . We invite anyone interested in either Chess or Go to attend our Friday meetings and perhaps join our inter-school team.
TOASTMISTRESS Aren ' t you a Toastmistress? Maybe you should be!
"Learn to love your language and use it with Grace and Facility". This is the aim of every member of the Toast- mistress Club. The second full year of existence has seen a slight increase in membership with students involved in the group from all grades. The meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday afternoon of each month . Commencing with afternoon tea, a brief business meeting is then held followed by a diverse speaking programme. Through participating in the Club, girls learn formal business procedures but more importantly they gain self con- fidence in their speaking abilities. Our thanks go to Mrs Deasy and Mrs Taylor, members of the Toastmistress Club, for their assistance and encourage- ment. Toastmistress provides an opportunity for girls of all ages and abilities for self improvement while enjoying themselves. President - Kathryn Redman
