1981 School Magazine
WHY LATIN? A lot of people these days wouldn't study Latin because it's "boring, difficult and useless". That's not true, Latin is an aid to English, French, Italian and most other modern European languages. It will enable you to understand school mottos, pick up a few words of foreign languages and delve into the fascinating world of the Romans. It's an interesting way of learning ancient history and a guide to Asterix comics. In short Latin is not useless. The language of science can never be so. Helena Bond 8 Lilley On the l8th March 1981, the Latin classes visited the Pompeii Exhibition. We were amazed how well the artifacts were preserved. Although we had learnt quite a bit about the things we would see, many items surprised us a lot. One dis- play held enormous Gladiator's armour. Compared to the casts of the people, they were monstrous. There were many sculptures and mosiacs. Lots of lamps, plates and cups were also displayed. Another thing that sur- prised us was a water heater which looked verv much like an electric urn. Being very proud people, the Romans loved hav- ing statues and busts made of themselves, so we saw quite a few of these. Suzy Grice 8G
