DEBATING REPORT This year debating has been both broad based and high reaching. We had a very enthusiastic response at the beginning of the year and held auditions f or new debaters. A large variety of interschool debating has been available to the girls this year. Apex debating is organis- ed by Apex Clubs (as the name suggests) who provide topics based on various controversial issues. Senior C team reached the f inals. Mary-Ann Jolly, Alison Overland, Mary Pearson, Jenny Roberts and Dianne Wilson. Congratulations. Q.D.U. (Queensland Debating Union) is another serious competitive form of debating but with less serious topics: e.g. the finals this year, "That fame is the name of the game". Two of our teams reached the finals:- Senior A: Fiona Callinan, Caroline Kennison, Rebecca Riggs (Captain) and Alison Thomp- son;Junior A: Louise Curtis (Captain), Alexandra Hender- son, Joanne McFarlane, Rebecca Shepherd. All girls achieved well. Social Circuit Debating has continued this year with a great deal of success. Schools take turns as hosts and both competition and 'fun' teams participate. ln certain grades of the 'fun' debates two schools are mixed together for limited preparation debates and the atmo- sphere is very relaxed and enjoyable. The 'competition' debates stay in school teams but there is still sometimes limited preparation and light topics e.g. "Love is like the measles". Our Senior competition team is undefeated and all others have achieved great success. Congratulations to all girls who participated in any (or all) of these forms of debating. This year we have been somewhat handicapped by the lack of coaches, as teachers unavoidably found themselves overcommitted. Perhaps next year some parents might become involved. 46

Many of them have probably become virtually experts in the field by virtue of being on the inside of so many of their girls' debates" Their help would certainly be greatly appreciated. We would like to thank the staff members who have found the trme to help and support us. Once again, congratulations and for next year GOOD LUCK. Rebecca Riggs (Debating Captain). Fiona Callinan and Rebecca Riggs took part in trials for Q.D.U. State team. Rebecca was in the final six when the team was selected. Rebecca won the North West region finals in 'Youth Speaks for Australia". Jill Sanderson.
