LE QUATORZE JUILTET On Monday, 16th July, about 700 loyal French students from all over Brisbane rolled up at Wavell Heights' State High to celebrate France's national day, 'le quatorze juillet' (Bastille Day to non-French ignoramuses). We sang (or at least some of us did - others made strange noises resembling cows with gastric trouble) French songs, including'La Marseillaise". We played French lotto and participated in quizzes. Skits and entertainments were presented by the various schools and the annual can-can was performed. However, the highlight of the evening was when Mrs. Spykerboer's grade 12 French class attacked the Spykerboer residence at midnight. Quel horreur! Hoards of hungry, giggling females invaded, armed with sleeping bags, biitows, and food!!!Actually (and this spoils the dramatic effect) we were invited by our esteemed 'pro- fesseur' for a slumber-party, after the celebrations at Wavell. The quantity of food we were subjected to is literally indescribable - cakes (chocolate, coconut, orange, etc. etc.), French (and boarding house) cheese with plain biscuits, French stick loaves with piles of bul ter and jam, meringues, quiches, apple-pie - Ohl c'etait trop dure pour moi! And if you think that that was the height of gluttony, breakfast consisted of delicious French 'croissants' with butter and jam and coffee. As you can well imagine, what were once trim, gorgeous Grammar seniors became rather large, round (and sick) blobs who rolled around incontrollably on the bus com- ing into school. By sheer good fortune (???) the majority of us had footy training that morning - guess who were the best tacklers?!?
