BASTTI,LEDAY On the morning of the 14th July a celebration was held at the {ndooroopilly State F{igh School to com- memorate the F'rench -National holiday, Bastille Dav. It was attended bv French students of Grades 8 und 9 fio- various Brisbane and Xpswich secondary schools. The hall was decorated with streamers and balloons in the French colours, blue, white and red. The programme commenced with the playing of the Marseillaise by our talented trumpet player, Jenny Roberts. 1at the end of the day, -fenny received a box of crystallised French violets for her efforts. She was unceitain as to whether she was supposed to eat them or smell them!) The whole hall then joined in to sing other tuneful (?) French songs including "Le Sous-Marin Vert" (The Yellow Submarine). At frst our efforts were somewhat reluctant, but soon the spirit of the occasion overcame us and we joined in heartilv. Onebt the most popular events was the Can Can (supplied by ten B.G.G.S. girls from three-A and ttrrae S) which was encored three times while most of the audience tried to catch the eye of the tele- vision cameras filming it. Kathy Nolan suPplied a little extra wrscheduled enterfainment when ,rher ballet shoe flew off into the crowd, much to their surprise. During the morning there were many oppor- tunities ior the audienle to obtain prizes such as French T-shirts, books and posters. There ,was a French quiz in which our entrant Jgnny Roberts came frst and won an Asterix T-shirt safng "Je Parle Francais." Pam Bloyce and Narelle Shea car- ried off the lotto prizes but we were unsqbcessful with our lucky door tickets. The most entertaining competition was the Can Can mmpetition which was won by an indiscrete "nun", a^leggy St. Aidan's girl and our,"patriotic granma" lalias Elisa Swindon) who kicked the high- est and longest. The highlight of the day was the fancy dress com- petition in which the competitors dressed up as French characters. The boys'section was won by the "Eiffel T'ower" and the "F{unchback of Notre Dame". There were several winners in the girls'sec- tion including otu "patriotic granma", complete with French knitting. The day was ended in the true French style by the se,rving oi a gourmet lunch. The schools lined up bbhinil counters where they were given a "plasti- que" a twical French student lunch of baguette (French'6iead), meat, cheese, a piece of fruit, a soft- But on the whole we had a very successful and en- joyable day and it was certainly a welcome change hilm the normal school routine.
