After staggering ri"""il"-t.t of U"d and opening the French win- a"#r--'*.itund that about ten-enormous rotrls of ;il;'t;;;;; w-ie being rolled off a truck and [r"." f*O"ini with a tremendous thump on the [oot- ;;dt rh; dd of each roll was then sliced o{ by u ;;il;f;ffip southern Frenchmen and rolled into a iiil"t.'6.i t"iliao*n to the printing presses.of the American newspaper the "ilerald Tribune"' We it"dl"ii"n to noticd the day before that our hotel was &;tt ;pposite one of lhe biggest newspaper of- fices in Faris. ^--Lif"-in F ance is fun, but it has its hazards' Driv- ins up the Champs-Elysees' one of the busiest streets in-paris is reallya nerve-racking experjence, not to mention trvine-to overtake a stream of trucks on a winding mbuntain road near Mont tslanc'- w" #"t" reallv surprised when we were flagged to the side of the rirad 6y a pair of gendarmes only to find that a motorconvoy of what looked like the "*tt of an atomic reactbr was heading towards us lna ** spread across the narrow road' This hap- o"n"A i*'^"tal times, sometimes with the warning t'Convoi Exceptionnel" carried in front. -Si T'rooez iurned out not to be the luxurious place it *is supposed to be. Xt was a myriad-of mys- f"ilout narrow itrees with tiny shops' {ts beaches *i,iii*Ov but of course theie was no surf' We found a beiutiful place to stay, cafle{ Cavalaire, not fai down the masl. Fnom mf bed x had an uninter- ruoted view of the Mediteiranean. Unfortunately *i Meditetranean tan was short-lived' Lioing on Vittel water and baguettes.while we *u* doi-oine was also fun. We were even able to buy nougat froli Montelimar, one of the most famous noufiat-manufacturing areas in France.
