KLEIO SOCIETY
T he Kleio Society provides an opportunity for students who share a common interest in History to learn more about the ancient world. In previous years, the focus has been on Ancient Rome, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece. This year, students were given the opportunity to select the ancient civilisations they would like to explore. Some events from this year have been cookie archaeology, historical film viewings, constructing LEGO models of the Wonders of the Ancient World and an Ancient World escape room. As well as exploring fascinating artefacts, The Kleio Society is a great way to interact with other people who share a love of the rich and diverse history of the world. Dr Alice Cranney
LIBELLUM SOCIETY
T he Libellum Society, the resident book club at BGGS, is responsible for all Library-related activities such as Book Week, as well as events and fundraisers of our own creation. This year our events were attended by many members of the School community, and we had wonderful participation from students in all Year levels. Our year began with Libellum’s festive ‘Year 7 Welcome’ event, followed by the annual Book Café, where we recreated the lands of Middle-Earth from JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. In July, our Year 7 and 8 Readers’ Cup team Allanah Steer (7H), Remy Kalinin (8H), Charlotte Wilson (8G), Serina Stratton (8O), Amber Zhao (7H) and Charlie Watkins (7E)) placed second in the Brisbane North competition which was hosted at Girls Grammar for the first time.
Our favourite event this year was BOOKS2DEVOUR which, after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, was a huge success with more than 100 cake submissions, a completely sold-out bake stall, and a display in the library that was as sweet as it was spectacular. The winning cake, Anne of Green Gables , was crafted by Elise Truong (12B), but the People’s Choice award went to Greer Murphy, Celeste Garry, Maggie Lynch, Emily Edwards and Ysee Nicolas (7H + 7B) for their version of The Grinch . Finally, our year ended with the Harry Potter Hard Quiz in October, celebrating 25 years of JK Rowling’s magical novels. Throughout the year we have raised money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, combining to more than $1000 for this worthy cause. We would like to extend our gratitude to our coordinator, Ms Christopherson, the Library staff, and two esteemed ‘life members’ of Libellum, Leia Kirkham (12B) and Camille Cahill (12G), for six years of involvement. Overall, the Libellum Society had a wonderful year, and we are so excited to see what comes next. Odetta Kalinin (10H) and Dorothy Rae (10G) CAPTAINS
