CALLIGRAPHY CLUB C alligraphy Club is a casual and relaxing club that anyone can join at any time to enjoy the traditional Japanese art of Shodō ( 書道 ). This year we have had a record-breaking number of students participating in Calligraphy Workshops, learning Shodō (characters) and Sumi-e (brush paintings) from our amazing instructors who are incredibly experienced in this art form. We had the honour of submitting our works to the International Sumi-e competition in Japan and had the opportunity to have our works featured in an art gallery in Tokyo. Our artworks have also been on display at the Queensland Japanese Cultural Festival ‘Matsuri Brisbane’ for 2022. We enjoy sharing this aspect of traditional Japanese culture with everyone. We hope that in the years to come, Calligraphy will remain an accessible and rewarding activity for all students to participate in. We sincerely thank our wonderful instructors, Mrs Hirayama, Mrs Kadono, Mrs Nakai and Mrs Tanowaki, as well as our Calligraphy Coordinator, Mrs Ross. Charlie Evans (12E) and Remi Hirayama (12L)

CHESS CLUB C hess Club is a Thursday lunchtime activity that students from all Year levels are welcome to attend—whether a beginner or skilled player. Several other games, such as UNO and Scrabble, are also available to play. This year, many new Year 7 girls have joined and impressed us with their skills, dominating the chess board! An exciting new initiative this year was playing with the BGS Chess Teams on Wednesday afternoons, which was a fun way to practice against skilled opponents in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. Overall, this has been a great year for Chess Club, and we hope to see even more new students next year! Rachel Watkins (12R) CAPTAIN
