DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS

D octors Without Borders is a Service Group that raises funds and awareness for the humanitarian and medical aid that Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides to projects in conflict zones and countries affected by endemic diseases and violence. Each fortnight, we attend meetings to listen to informative and engaging presentations about one of MSF’s recent projects. Topics range from the Russian and Ukrainian War to the importance of latrines and good sanitation. In addition to exploring the breadth of aid delivered by MSF to thousands of people around the world, group members have learned about the effect diseases have on developing countries, including how they spread, and how outbreaks are controlled and prevented with the help of MSF. Questions are posed to the group and collaborative discussion is encouraged at our meetings. To show our continual support for Médecins Sans Frontières, Doctors Without Borders held a bake stall in Term 4. We would like to thank all of our group members for actively participating in group discussions, as well as our coordinators, Ms Urry and Ms Bernard, for their continued efforts and support. We have met with environmental specialists about the topics of waste, utilities, water, and biodiversity, to construct projects that can make positive green change in our school environments. We decided to focus our efforts around biophilia and biophilic design, the practice of connecting people and the natural world within our built environments and communities. Through this, with help from our coordinator, Mrs Woodford, we distributed plants among our Houses to be kept on rotation in House Group rooms in the hope that all students could reap the benefits of a greener working space. It is our hope that the School continues and advances this project in the years ahead, not only maximise the learning of students, but to promote environmentally conscious practices. LORD MAYOR'S YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL T he Lord Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (LMYAC) provides an opportunity for Year 10 students from across Brisbane to come together with the Lord Mayor to discuss issues affecting the city’s youth. I had the privilege to be the representative for BGGS, and during my time on the council, I was able to meet other likeminded people and contribute to Brisbane’s community. We were able to take part in many activities, such as leadership workshops, the Brisbane Luminous Lantern Parade, and more. A highlight of the year was coming together in small groups with other members of LMYAC to create a project improving an aspect of Brisbane and getting to present it to the Lord Mayor. It was a fun experience, and I am very grateful for the opportunity I was given to represent my School. Freya Lennon (10L)
