ANZAC DAY O n 22 April, five Year 12 students, accompanied by Ms Mungomery and Ms Mynott, attended the ANZAC Day Student Ceremony in ANZAC Square. The ceremony featured a variety of addresses by special guests including Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young PSM, and the Honourable Steven Miles MP, and a heartfelt wreath-laying ceremony, in which students from several schools from South East Queensland participated. Once the wreaths were laid around the eternal flame, RSL representatives read a range of reflective poems which left students with a newfound perspective on those who have served—particularly, ‘ANZAC day’ by D Hunter. This was followed by the Ode, The Last Post , and the sacred minute of silence. The ceremony was an amazing opportunity for students to reflect on those who have courageously fought to defend their countries and to honour their memory.
At the end of the ceremony, we had the chance to tour the memorial galleries under ANZAC Square. This memorial is filled with pictures, plaques, and interactive displays that brought to life the sacrifice made by the ANZACs in both World Wars. All five of us were grateful for such an amazing, and truly unforgettable opportunity, to gather with other like-minded students and pay our respects to those who sacrificed their lives for our safety and freedom. WORLD VISION CHILD SPONSORSHIP AND GIFT PROGRAM
Since 1988, Girls Grammar has supported the World Vision Child Sponsorship Program. In 2022, each Year 8 and 9 House Group has participated in a variety of fundraising activities to raise funds for their sponsor children, Sumaya and Peterson, as well as their communities. Bake sales have again been very appealing to the School community. From brownies and cupcakes to lolly bags and Hirschfeld’s famous rocky road, staff and students offer wonderful support to these highly anticipated lunch time stalls on the CLC walkway. World Vision aims to bring hope and opportunity to disadvantaged and struggling communities, and our fundraising events play a role in empowering communities to protect children from hunger, exploitation, and violence. As well as covering the costs of Sumaya and Peterson’s annual sponsorship, Year 8 and 9 students have raised over $3500 for the World Vision Gift Program. We are proud to be among the over two million Australians who have chosen to partner with World Vision and make a difference to our world. Amelia Dudgeon (9H), Zoe Freeman (9H) and Ajin Kyoung (9H)
