BGGS GALA CONCERT 2022

A s the biggest music event on the School calendar, this year’s Gala was especially exciting as it was the first live Gala performance in three years. The theme, Luminescence , was centred around an exploration of light and love to feed the soul and lift the spirit. The concert showcased our senior music students encompassing strings, band, percussion, and choir ensembles, including a massed choir. The wonderful venue, the Great Hall at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, indulged the audience with stunning visual and lighting effects. It was thoroughly illuminating to have Ms Rebecca Archer’s contribution as guest Master of Ceremonies for Gala 2022.

For many students, this was the first time they had experienced performing on such a grand scale, and the concert was an amazing opportunity to showcase hours of preparation and dedication to music at BGGS. The evening ended with a bang (quite literally) featuring indoor fireworks during the powerful closing mass-medley. On behalf of the BGGS music community, we would like to extend our gratitude and acknowledge all the hardworking music staff and conductors and especially our Director of Instrumental Music (Acting), Mrs Davidson, whose contributions and tireless efforts were an inspiration. A thank you also is extended to Ms Euler Welsh for her unwavering support of the BGGS Gala. Sophia Caposecco (11H) and Trish Chow (11H) 114 | BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL 2022

VERMILION HIGH PROGRAM T he Vermilion High Program is an initiative within QUT that works with secondary school students on their original song compositions. Being part of Vermilion High this year was an incredible experience for me and for everyone involved. According to the staff at Vermilion, the few winning artists were chosen from hundreds of applicants who submitted their songs for consideration. From there, the other winners and I got to meet with producers, environment such as this really took my song to the next level, as well as providing me with learning experiences and new ideas. Turning our music from simple piano lines into a fully produced track was a dream come true for me and the other artists.

We performed our original songs in La Boite Roundhouse Theatre in Kelvin Grove in front of friends, family, and a large audience, giving us the opportunity to step out of our comfort zones and showcase our work to the public. I’m really thankful for the opportunities that were given to us during the program—as young artists, we were given confidence and hope for our future musical endeavours. It was incredible to work and perform with other talented artists around our age, who all shared a passion for song writing and performing on stage. Schuyler Mills (12E)

photographers, and the marketing team to debrief on what kind of sound we were looking for, and what kind of image we wanted for ourselves as artists. The staff members, students at QUT themselves, were very supportive and creative when it came to us establishing our artist labels. It was really eye opening to be able to record in a real studio with high quality production software and synthesizers. Working in a professional
