CATHEDRAL CONCERT

I n June, the BGGS annual Cathedral Concert was presented at St John’s Cathedral. In addition to showcasing our senior ensembles, the concert featured internationally acclaimed guitar soloist, Karin Schaupp, who performed with Chamber Strings in an incredible performance titled Concerto for Guitar and Strings in A Major, 1st Movement , by Fernando Carulli. The wonderful acoustics of the Cathedral gave each note of every piece a beautiful echo that rang throughout the 600-person audience. All of the incredible performers, and their respective conductors, successfully transformed this peaceful venue into such an evocative and resonant concert for all to enjoy. The audience was encapsulated in the beauty of the work by our staff and students, who created a joyous and memorable musical experience. Isabella Peters (12E)

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CONCERT

T he International Women’s Day Concert is always a highlight of the School year. Not only is it a time where we, as musicians and listeners, can enjoy a program full of extraordinary female composers, it is an opportunity to hear the amazing compositions created by students at the School. The 2021 Composition Competition winners, Schuyler Mills (12E), Serena Choo (2021), and I along with Dorothy Rae (10G), winner of the 2021 Wight Memorial Medal, were given the opportunity to premiere our original compositions in concert—something that to this day remains such a high achievement for all four of us. The concert showcased solo performances from many talented musicians at the School, including Izzy Pak (12O), Remi Hirayama (12L) and Michelle Jeong (12W). Another highlight of the concert was the world premiere of Wind of Life by Dr Jodie Blackshaw, performed by Symphonic Winds. This touching piece was a privilege to be able to hear and share for the first time at our very own concert. Overall, the concert was a stunning showcase of female composers, performers, and musicians and a huge thank you must go to everyone involved, including the students of Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Strings, Chamber Singers, Chorale, Symphonic Winds, all student composers and soloists, as well as, of course, the incredible staff who make every single BGGS concert so special.
