MUSIC CAPTAINS YEAR IN REVIEW MUSIC

F ollowing a delayed start to the School year, International Women’s Day was the first signature concert of 2022, featuring outstanding student compositions by Schuyler Mills (12E), Charlotte Parsonage (12G), and Dorothy Rae (10G). Instrumental and vocal competitions were just around the corner in Term 2, and the winners of each of the categories performed marvellously at the 2022 Artists in Concert. In June, senior ensembles performed at St John’s Anglican Church for the annual Cathedral Concert. As always, the acoustic in the cathedral granted a new and rewarding experience for all instrumentalists. The musical agenda was jam-packed in Term 3, seeing Gillies Chamber Music Competitions, Interhouse Choir, and the long-awaited return of a live Gala Concert! Under the theme Luminescence , senior ensembles and massed choirs came together to celebrate light and love, culminating in the fantastic medley which included some all-time BGGS favourites. With our own P. T. Barnum, a few glow-in-the-dark human butterflies, and drumsticks, and sensational fireworks to round out the night, Gala 2022 truly was a smash hit. Arts Fest in May was an incredible opportunity for musicians of all ages and instrumental ability to shine. We witnessed the debuts of some of our junior ensembles and solo artists who presented the products of their hard-work and talents to different corners of the School. Only weeks later, our junior and intermediate groups performed at some fantastic concerts including the Jazz Concert, Movie Magic Band Concert, Fireside Stories Strings Concert and the Junior Choral Concert. For some of our younger players and singers, these were their first performances at BGGS, and it was wonderful to see how much progress everyone had made throughout the year. What was truly special about Instrumental Music this year was our renewed privilege to collaborate across Year levels as well as between ensembles. Having senior mentors at junior ensemble rehearsals aimed to aid and inspire younger players, and the experiences were, no doubt, valuable to all involved.

BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL 2022 | 111

In addition to our remarkable Chamber Music program, more opportunities to collaborate with musicians outside the normal orchestral setting occurred at Gala—vocal soloists teaming up with bands, string and brass instrumentalists partnering with Grammar Singers and, of course, the Luminescence Medley that blended the sounds of over 410 musicians. It is these memories of Creating beauty in the blue that will stay with all of us beyond our years at BGGS. After the fun and success of all the Instrumental Music endeavours this year, our gratitude goes to all the Music staff, and particularly, Director of Instrumental Music, Mrs Davidson, for making the year so special. Your leadership, wisdom, and unwavering passion for music has been inspiring and has made our roles as Captains an absolute pleasure. We are grateful for the opportunity to lead our fellow musical Grammar sisters this year, and we are extremely proud of the dedication of every single BGGS musician to their respective crafts. We cannot wait to see what 2023 brings to BGGS Instrumental Music. Sally Grice (12E), Madeline Khoo (12E) and Pascal Green (12G) CAPTAINS
