formed in 1938 at a time when there was a “preponderance of very young girls in the Association” and a number of more Senior members of the Association “wished for an opportunity to meet people of their won generation”. It was also in response to Miss Lilley’s wish that she would like to see the Association taking an active part in the life of the community. The Senior Group donated monies to the Bush Book Club, the Toys for the Courier Mail Christmas Tree for the Children’s Hospital, the City Mission, the Silky Oaks Orphanage, and the Red Cross were just some of the beneficiaries. The War Work Group fund was set up to distribute and collect wool and finished articles and to organise functions to raise money for the war effort. Organisations supported included the Prisoner of War Fund and the comforts Fund. Regular knitting parties were held and for those who did not knit there was an opportunity to sew. Waist-coats from grey blankets for the troops overseas and to cut up old garments to fill pillows for the Red Cross. The Group also supplied “comforts” such as balaclavas, socks and mittens directly to the men of the 2/2 Field Hygiene Section. Dances and Bridge afternoons or evenings were held to raise money for this group. The OGA has also maintained links with and provided support for many other institutions and associations developing in Brisbane. This has included support for the movement to establish a university in Queensland and later to found the University Women’s College; an affiliation with the National Council of Women, the Secondary Schools’ Past Students’ Association and the Queensland Secondary Schools’ Girls’ Club.
