CHAIRS OF THE BOARD AFTER WHOM HOUSES WERE NAMED

CHAIRS BOARD OF THE

SIR CHARLES LILLEY CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES 1877 – 1887 It is generally thought that Lilley House was named after Sir Charles Lilley, but Vox Discipulorum claims that it also honoured his son, Mr Edwyn Lilley (trustee), and his granddaughter, Miss Kathleen Lilley (headmistress). Sir Charles Lilley was Premier of Queensland from 1868 to 1869, was appointed Chief Justice in 1879 and knighted in 1881. It was through his strong advocacy that Brisbane Girls Grammar School was established in 1875, he also helped found the Brisbane School of Arts and Brisbane Grammar School. In 1874 he chaired a royal commission which led to a free and secular education policy. He campaigned for a university and in 1891 chaired a royal commission on university establishment, but did not live to see it founded in 1909. SIR SAMUEL WALKER GRIFFITH CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES 1887 – 1892 AND 1895 – 1904 In addition to being Premier from 1883 to 1888 Sir Samuel Walker Griffith was the state’s Chief Justice from 1893 to 1903. He served on the Royal Commission into Education chaired by Sir Charles Lilley and was the architect of the Education Act of 1875 which promoted scholarships to Grammar schools. In 1903, he became the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. The Sir Samuel Walker Griffith Memorial Prize is given to the foremost Ancient History student in Year 12 on Speech Day. THE HON JUSTICE WOOLCOCK CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES 1906 – 1929 Educated at Brisbane Grammar School Woolcock completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1883 at Sydney University where he was awarded a gold medal for English verse. To encourage students in this School to be creative and innovative in the writing of English, Justice Woolcock donated the Betty Woolcock Challenge Cup, in honour of his daughter. The Ida Woolcock Challenge Cup in memory of his wife is given to the senior student who shows the most public spirit as a schoolgirl.
