YEAR 9 DESIGN AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
A s an elective subject for Year 9 this course encompasses foundational skills in design and digital technologies. Students specialise in the practice of design thinking as a methodology for problem solving newly desired virtual and physical solutions. Girls adopt a project-based learning style and develop key skills, such as design sketching and learning JavaScript programming fundamentals.
Below are some reflections from the Year 9 cohort:
‘Year 9 DDT has opened my eyes to a world of ever-advancing technological methods. Designing and manufacturing a lantern for a specific target market presented an enjoyable and rewarding challenge, allowing me to unleash my creativity for functional and aesthetic purposes.’ – Grace Paschkewitz (9O)

‘I really enjoyed designing and creating Photoshop, Illustrator and sketching im but it was really rewarding when the fin
ages were challenging, al product wasproduced.’–
Chalani Welgama (9B)
‘Year 9 DDT has been thoroughly enjoyable and challenging. We explored and practiced computational thinking to solve digital problems. It provided us insight into how the technological world is constantly developing and progressing around us.’ – Janet Su (9E)
‘Learning and gaining new knowledge on how technology is changing our world every day in both design and digitally is fascinating.’ – Ayisha Del Rosario (9W)
YEAR 10 DESIGN AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
D esign and Digital Technologies has provided an in-depth understanding of the principles of design and the computer science needed for creating novel systems, services and products that meet stakeholder wants and needs. Using design-thinking and technical skills, we utilised design theory, Adobe Creative Suite, sketching and schematics, as well as 3D modelling to create a host of innovative solutions. Initially we investigated the family home environment to consider redesign and restructuring opportunities. We utilised theories of human-centred design (HCD) process to explore opportunities for improving daily experiences and to investigate daily ‘pinch-points’ using a design-thinking mindset. This lead us to design a web application using Adobe XD. To extend the experience, we then encompassed the circular economy model for sustainable futures, whereby waste = food. The circular economy model provided an impetus for commercially prototyping a scaled 3D pop-up shop for our novel product or service. We expressed customer flow and customer interactions that would occur in our commercial outlet. To finish our studies we coded a website with HTML, CSS and JavaScript which showcased our ideas. The Year 10 Design and Digital Technologies course has provided an extensive insight in to careers I can consider for my future. Jordan Havu (10W)
