GRAMMAR ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION ORGANISATION

T he Grammar Environmental Conservation Organisation (GECO) is a service club for all girls passionate about the environment and creating a more sustainable way of life. Despite the unforeseen circumstances of this year, we are still immensely proud of all that was achieved. Our first project of 2020 was Grammar Goes Green (GGG) in March. While we hoped to hold a GGG at all three of the School’s campuses this year, we were only able to have one at the Main Campus. This involved monitoring and maintaining bins, preparing Jade plants to be sold at Open Day, and discovering all the nooks and crannies of our School’s greenspace. The Jade plants we hoped to sell at Open Day were repurposed for selling during Love Day instead and proved to be a hit.

We also kept a close eye on the School’s beehive this year. Although the hive wasn’t ready to be split, the honey tasting, swarm of bees, and guest bee-keepers were quite the show! One of our final initiatives for GECO 2020 was the well-needed update of the bin stickers. We shifted to brighter, clearer, and more heavy-duty stickers on the lids to emphasise the importance of disposing rubbish correctly. Through these projects—and many more including the environmentally friendly item of the week and GECO art competition—we hope to have contributed to the fight against climate change and the School’s sustainability goals.
