VOLLEYBALL
B GGS enjoyed a great season of volleyball in 2020, fielding 10 teams—eight of which placed in the top two for the competition. Due to COVID-19 this season was shorter than usual and some games had to be limited to an hour. Sadly, spectators were also not able to attend matches for the majority of the season. However, we were grateful to be able to play and achieve such wonderful results. One of our goals for this season was to not only focus on improving current skills, but also learn new skills. A highlight of the season was the Open team’s intense game against the undefeated Brisbane State High School. Meeting in the final round, our BGGS team managed to take two sets, resulting in a close and exciting five set match. We must thank our, Volleyball Coordinator, Ms McCorley, for her support and the time and effort she has put in to making this season happen in the midst of such uncertainty. We would also like to thank our wonderful coaches for their efforts in preparing the teams to play a great season in such a short timeframe. Having played volleyball at BGGS since Year 7 it has been an honour to be captains of a sport we are both so passionate about and to lead such a talented and committed group of girls. Congratulations to the girls for an amazing season! We know we are leaving the volleyball
squad in capable hands for next year’s season. Emma McDonnell (12H) and Hayley Potter (12H) CAPTAINS
WATER POLO
T he 2019/2020 Water Polo season, while definitely unprecedented, was undeniably worthy of celebration. It was disappointing to see our season cut short a week out from semi- finals due to COVID-19, but the Water Polo community recognises and commends the 11 out of 21 teams who this year made the top five in their respective competitions. During the Christmas holidays our BGGS sisters made a splash at the 2019/2020 State Championships, with our U12s placing 7th, U14s placing 5th, U16s placing 4th, and the U18s placing a respectable 7th. The achievements didn’t stop there. In January the U16 and U18 girls competed at the 2020 Australian Youth Championships, where the U16 girls placed 9th, winning a plate for the School and the U18s finished a remarkable 10th place—finishing as the number one school team in Australia for their age group. A number of girls were selected for Queensland representative squads based on their performance at these events. We congratulate Anne Butler (10G), Georgia De Stefani (12W), Lottie Johnston (10H), Sophie Lucas (11O), Isabel Lumley (11M), Finn Magill (11H), Charlotte McDade (8H), Helen Mellick (8R), Amy Middlemass (10M), Nina Obermair (11G), Georgia Petersen (9E), Caitlin Small (8R), Astrid Thomas (8H) and Chelsea Warat (12R) for their selection in the Queensland representative U14, U16 and U19 squads.
As captains we would like to thank our Water Polo Coordinator, Ms White, who in her first year in the role performed it with ease. We wish the BGGS Water Polo community the best of luck for the 2020/2021 season and can’t wait to support the girls poolside! Georgia De Stefani (12W) and Chelsea Warat (12R) CAPTAINS
