FROM THE SPORTS CAPTAINS
P icture it—January 2020, a new decade, a fresh start, and a bright year ahead for BGGS Sport. As per usual, our girls hit the ground running—swimming, batting, throwing and bowling too. Both of us were looking forward to organising QGSSSA events, ordering merchandise, baking brownies for supporters, and delivering our routine summaries at fortnightly assemblies. However, that didn’t all go to plan with the curve ball 2020 threw at us. Thankfully, cricket, softball, water polo and cross country were well underway before restrictions were put in place due to COVID-19. The Girls Grammar stands at QG Swimming were packed with supporters who witnessed the incredible talent and hard work of our girls. Autumn fixtures also had the opportunity to play a few rounds of competition, and we saw the introduction of the iconic ‘elbow tap’ instead of the handshake. Throughout the restrictions to sporting events and later in remote learning, Year 11 and 12 girls hosted live morning fitness sessions on the BGGS2020 Instagram account. The sessions provided girls the opportunity to keep active while learning remotely. The Sport Department also did an incredible job supporting our health and wellbeing by uploading home workout plans and videos to the Remote Learning Page on Minerva. As Captains, our aim was to foster an environment for girls to see sport as enjoyable and fun, as well as competitive. Funnily enough, the virtual School assemblies were a perfect opportunity for us to spark
our creative and fun side. We held an international press conference, delivered the news, became radio hosts, conducted our very own airline safety presentation, and became certified rappers. While filming was a lot of fun for us, it made us happy to think we were providing comic relief during a challenging time. The gradual return to school was soon followed, of course, with the gradual return to sport. Winter Fixtures were held in a modified format, as was athletics, rowing and badminton. Despite QGSSSA restricting spectators from being there physically, our sportswomen dug deep within themselves and made history; the Rowing First VIII and Second VIII crews both achieved first place, bringing home the Head of the River Trophy for the first time in the competition’s history. Our badminton Senior As, Bs, Cs, and Ds all placed first in their respective competitions, with the Opens coming in 2nd. These incredible results demonstrate our girls’ resilience and dedication in the face of adversity, and we could not be more proud. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to represent BGGS as Sport Captains this year. It has been such an enjoyable and enriching experience, and we would not have wanted to remember our leadership legacy any other way. Best of luck to the 2021 Sports Captains and thank you to the Grammar crew for being on board with us all year. Amelia Perrin (12H) and Saee Sane (12O) SPORTS CAPTAINS S
ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS
W e were very excited to be chosen as Artistic Gymnastics Captains for 2020. Our captaincy provided us with the opportunity to pursue our passion and lead a talented and enthusiastic group of girls. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the QGSSSA Artistic Gymnastics Competition was cancelled. Although disappointing, girls still showed great commitment and dedication to training. The team was looking very strong and it was disappointing we could not compete this year. We would like to commend every BGGS gymnast for working so diligently throughout the 14-week season. We could not have wished for a more committed and enthusiastic group of girls. We are sad to say goodbye to another season of gymnastics, but feel fortunate to have shared more gymnastic experiences with this group. We wish everyone good luck for next year’s season.
