COMPETITIONS YEAR 7 SIGMA MATHS
Y ear 7 Sigma Maths has been a great opportunity. It has allowed us to extend ourselves and taught us many strategies for solving problems. Throughout the year we have participated in workshops after school that have taught us about how to problem-solve and helped us to prepare for competitions. These include the Australian Problem Solving Mathematics Olympiad, Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition, the Year 7 Interhouse Math Quiz, The Australian Mathematics Competition, and the QAMT Years 7 and 8 Quiz. Participating in these competitions taught us to look at every question carefully and work out which of the many strategies we have learned will help solve the problem. It has been a great experience to work with other girls passionate about math and we have benefitted from being able to learn from each other. We would highly recommend the Sigma Maths Program for all girls as it is really fun and you will learn new skills that will benefit you for life! Eliza Hoyling (7O) and Sophie Hunt (7O)
YEAR 7 INTERHOUSE MATHS QUIZ
YEAR 8 MATHS TEAM CHALLENGE
O n Thursday 4 June, nine teams of six Year 7 students participated in the Year 7 Interhouse Maths Quiz, putting their knowledge to the test. The Quiz was broken up into four rounds (estimation, speed, short answer and general math knowledge) with a team captain leading each round. In the final round (trivia) team members joined forces to fight their way to the top of the leader board. For the first time since 2015 Gibson House rose victorious, taking away the chocolates and the trophy. The Quiz was an afternoon full of fun and healthy competition. Emily Kua (7G) and Ava Tran (7G)
T he Year 8 Maths Team Challenge was an amazing experience that we recommend all BGGS students try. The Challenge consisted of several rounds, including a team round, a relay round, and a couple of trivia rounds. Each round was really fun and gave us a chance to improve our problem-solving skills while working together in different ways. Our favourite round was the trivia round, as it was our strong suit.
