CONCERT BAND Over 50 zany musicians constituted the infamous B.G.G .S. Concert Band in 1985, under the experienced baton of Mr Ted Selby, M .B.E. to whom we owe our marked improvement over th e year. Thi s has enab led us to attempt a wider vari ety of more diffi cult musi c, including th e stra ins of that ever-successful musical "Ca ts", and " Hootenanny", which we performed at th e conce rt in second term. Th e band concluded th e evening with a rou sing encore in which the aud ience joined by c lapp ing. As usual, the highlight of th e band's actiVIties was the memorab le experience of the whacky Music Camp. There, we aga in combined with our mal e counterparts from B.G.S. to shock everyone, including our expert conductor from the Conservatorium of Music, Mr Arthur Middleton. As a result, combined band never sounded as good as it did in the Annual Music Camp Concert, again held at B.G.S. , where we aired the experience (or lack thereof) , we had gained from the sixteen-odd hours of rehearsals we enjoyed! Next on the calendar was th e Girls' Prom Concert for third term, at which the Concert Band again showed that we do actually practise (a bit!) , despite the one-and-a-half-hours of torture and heart attacks for Mr Selby every Wednesday afternoon. School Day simply would not have been the same without the mad buskers dressed up in fantastic costumes- who else, but members of you-know-what! In view of the successful year we have had, on behalf of all the Concert Band members, espec ially those in Year 12, we would like to thank Mr Selby for his valuable assistance in both performances and rehearsa ls. After five years of rehears ing every Wednesday till five - what will we do next year?!! To those intrepid musi c ians continuing next year- Good luck, (you may need it! ) and remain insane!

LA CAPELLA "La Capella" is a chamber vocal ensemble, comprising 16 students from both Brisbane Boys' Grammar and Brisbane Girls' Grammar Schools. It was formed a number of years ago for members of concert choir who wished to sing more specialised vocal works. Through out the year, "La Capella" has contributed to both Girls' Grammar and Boys' Grammar music evenings and in May received an invitation to perform at the annual Westside Cultural Festival Schools' Concert. In addition to this, in july, Dr Roy Wales, from the Queensland Conservatorium. of Musi c, invited the group to participate in the Australian Choral Conductors' Association Concert. All of these performances have provided invaluab le expe rience for the group and have encouraged them to always maintain a high standard of musi cianship and performance. To those who are leav ing the group, we wish you much success in the future. Thanks to Miss Cook for her guidance and to janet Holborow, the group's accompanist, for her work .
