EUROTOUR On Thursday, 13th June, 36 jetsetters-to-be, including three intrepid teachers, two tolerant mothers and a homesick teddy bear, took off from the Brisbane Airport, beginning a 29-hour flight to Frankfurt, Germany, for a five-week terrorization of Europe - alias the "Eurotour". After being fed copiously and continuously on the plane, we were then confronted with wurst, schnitzels, gorgeous gingerbread, tantalising tarts, cakes and divine chocolates, for the time we travelled through Germany from Rudesheim- um Rhein, in the south, to West Berlin in the north. Mr Miles very considerately tested all foods for us (we have photographic evidence of this) to make sure we weren't poisoned- when he managed to keep his mind and eyes off a certain poster advertising suntan lotion! Having left Germany in a state of shock, the road signs changed from German to French on our way through Switzerland to Nice on the famous French Riviera- a lovely strip of pretty pebbles, striped deck-chairs and countless

beautifully brown French people. After the German students had laughingly helped the French students through Germany, the situation was reversed when we had to ask for escargots, crepes, croissants and other such mouth- watering, but tongue-twisting culinary delights, on our way through the rolling French countryside, in contrast with the breath-taking spectacular ranges of Germany. The highlight of the trip was most definitely the week during which the French students stayed with French families in Strasbourg and the German students stayed with families in Freiburg in the Black Forest. With the odd, unfortunate exception, all the families showed wonderful hospitality to everyone, and some great friendships were formed. "I'm definitely going back!" were probably the first words of greeting to our families on our return; but, Europe, have no fear, it will at least be a few months before you have to suffer again!
