Virginia Cuppaidge Miss Cuppaidge attended Clayfield CollegeĀ· and she later studied Fine Arts in Sydney. She now lives and paints in New York, and has had numerous one-person shows in both Australia and the United States. She has considerable experience as a guest lecturer, as well as having been Artist- in-Residence at Berkeley University in California and the University of California . Her paintings are abstract works in which the backgrounds of softly blended atmospheric colours of light, are contrasted with deliberately scattered hard-edged shapes. They reveal a sensitivity to the emotional effects of changing, graduated colours. These backgrounds are meticulously built up in many layers of acrylic paint, resulting in a light and airy translucence. All Art classes took the opportunity to meet and to work with Miss Cuppaidge during the month of herĀ· residency. Girls were able to observe her painting techniques and the progress of a painting from commencement to completion. In addition, Miss Cuppaidge gave tuition and encouraged the girls to develop their own painting techniques. The painting created by Miss Cuppaidge during her residency, will remain in the school for eventual display in our new theatre.

MARGARET AND CATHRYN MITTELHEUSER
On Monday, February 25, 1985, Brisbane Girls' Grammar School welcomed its first Artist-in-Residence for a period of one month. This was made possible by the generosity of two Old Girls of the school, Miss Margaret Mittel heuser and Dr Cathryn Mittelheuser, who have both retained an interest in the school since they attended in 1940. They conceived the idea of sponsoring an Artist-in- Residence, so that students at the school can benefit from the experience of observing the progress of a painting by an artist of world renown .
Miss Virginia Cuppaidge is the first Artist-in-Residence at Brisbane Girls' Grammar School.
