As the high walls of the yards came in sight, the men bunched the tired horses and hurried them forward. Most were trotting dispiritedly, but a few excitable yearlings, led by the stallion, broke away, and strained every muscle to reach the sheltering scrub. This time, the horsemen were too intent upon driving the brumbies to the corral to worry about the escapees. One man, however, reined in his horse and fired at them, hitting a b lack colt Spurred by this menace, the brumbies leapt forwa rd, and crashed into the dark scrub. Only the stallion remained behind at the edge, watching. The corral was perhaps fifty yards from him, and a lready the dusty brumbies were milling around in it. A shrill whinny of terror rose a bove the cries of the other horses. The stallion recognized the voice of his leading mare. Agaiin she called fran tically, as the men tried to draft her into a narrow race. Fear of the men was replaced by intense hatred in the heart of the stallion. He was no longer a heavy, lumbering beast, but a noble horse, ready to fight for his mares . His eyes and nostrils dilated , and his neck arched, and as he minced out onto the plain, the call of the mare rang out clearly. He flung up his head and screamed his battle cry; then he charged at the yard, gaining speed with every stride. The high fence loomed through the dust. It would have been a stiff jump for a trained horse, and for the heavy stallion, a lmost impossible. Driven by his fury, he flung himself at the top railing, and, for a moment, it seemed a s if he might clear it, but his forelegs caught on the rail and it splintered and broke, sending him crashing into the yard. Vainly he screamed and thrashed in an attempt to rise , for his leg was broken. He failed to see the rifle pointed at him, and, as the merciful bulle ts struck him, his fiery eyes dulled, and his proud head was still , as the pall of dust gently settled over him. M.P. III B. CAKE MAKING. One Saturday morning, I decided to give the family and myself a treat for afternoon tea, so I got out the cookery book and thumbed through the pages. 36
"Small Cakes" said the heading, and I read and read and read, but they were all too "messy, " and a lot of bother for such a small qua ntity. I wanted quality, but I also wanted quantity. If I was going to give myself some hard work, I wanted a lot of reward for the inner man. Rich friut cakes came next, but a las, time was running out and they took three to four hours to cook and Mother probably would want the oven for the mid-day meal. I turned over again-Sponge Cakes ! Tha t was it-they only took a quick bake in the oven and I picked out a recipe; "beat twenty-five minutes"-Oh, no ! I could never stand the stra in for that time, besides (I shouldn 't tell this), I have seen Mum's flop, and she's a n expert-no, sponge cakes were out! I returned again to the thumbing operations-Ah ! biscuits. Tha t was it. Now let me think; the last time I made biscuits, didn' t they run into one another and spread a ll over the tray? No, I am definitely not a biscuit-maker. Just imagine my dismay when Mother came in to put dinner on. She told me that I could have the top of the stove, so I settled for pikelets. I made a poor little batch o± pikelets greatly reduced in number by the uncooked fa ilures which Chip, my dog, ate greedily. However , I can sincerely recommend Miss Schaver's Cookery Book to a nybody wanting a coup le of hours' good appetizing reading.
