In the afternoon we were divided into small groups and taken to the laboratories of many different researchers. Seeing the way in which research is conducted provided an insight into the workings of a future many other girls and I hope to pursue. The day ended with a careers forum and panel discussion. The panel, consisting of lab heads, professors, PhD students and clinicians, answered questions from the students in relation to their studies at university, their advice on pursuing a career in medical research and the different departments at QIMR. it was great to see the way my biology studies are applied in real life research and the amazing opportunities available for a future career path in medical research
Lectures at The QIMR On Wednesday 20 July, twenty Grammar girls attended the high school lecture series at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR). The day allowed the girls to hear about the latest medical research discoveries, tour the QIMR laboratories and talk to doctors and scientists about future careers in medical research. The day began with four different lectures from two professors and two PhD students on brain sciences, melanoma genetics, the links between obesity and cancer, and thyroid regulation and IQ. Although different from each other, each lecture was interesting and relevant for areas of future study and allowed us the opportunity to ask many questions

Forensic Science Camp 20n it was a great party at Peterson Winery Armidale, until Dani'el Gould got up to make a speech Half way through, he started to convulse and vomit and, shortly afterwards, he was dead Witnesses told of a car seen speedrig away shortly after the incident and on a wall, the words subsisto runco were sprayed in red paint Forensic Science Camp was hosted by The Armidale School where students formed teams in an attempt to solve this crime. Between the four of us, we had to gather enough information to arrest and charge the person we suspected. Each day, our group gathered evidence and we were able to request interviews and ask for more evidence to help us. On the third day, a search warrant was approved with more evidence arising from the search of the house of the suspect. Once we had enough evidence gathered, an arrest warrant was issued and we began work on the committal application for court. Finally our group took part in a mock trial with other groups that had been working on the same case, with parents and friends forming the jury for the trial. This camp was an amazing experience. The students who came on the camp were from a large number of schools from across Australia and it was easy and fun to make new friends
