Accounting
YEAR 11 ACCOUNTING SOPHIE MCKENDRY (11H) As an elective senior subject Accounting offers students the opportunity to challenge themselves in an unknown area. Accounting is a developmental skill that draws consistently from work in past terms and lessons. As students, we find our knowledge is ever growing and there is a real feeling of progress as we use our understanding from the past to solve what is being asked in the present. With a natural division between theory and practical work the lessons are highly beneficial as the subject recognises students as individual learners and the syllabus caters to this. Particularly in this subject, a smaller cohort is highly rewarding. The subject lends itself to group work and individual work, along with additional one-on-one time with the teacher in class. A very hands-on approach is taken towards the practical work providing an opportunity for students to understand the complexities of Accounting and its importance in business. This year alone we have done countless business transactions that mirror the accounting done in real life businesses. In Year 11 Accounting, the knowledge obtained and the experience itself sets the subject apart from others with prospects beyond the school walls being introduced. ■
YEAR 12 ACCOUNTING KRISTIE BAKER (12 H), KIRSTY CAMPBELL (12H), SAMANTHA DOBRENOV (12G) AND SHAMYA PUTTA (12M) Year 12 Accounting has been an enriching experience as we come to the end of our high school years and reflect back. This year we have not only used different accounting programmes such as MYOB, but also built on the fundamental accounting principles we learnt in Year 11. One of our favourite units this year was analysing real-life fraud cases. We were able to apply some of the work we learnt last year, specifically about internal controls, to the fraud situations we were investigating. Accounting this year involved applying our skills in different situations, preparing end of period financial statements, including cash flow statements and also learning how to analyse and interpret those financial statements in depth. We believe that Accounting has not only been a beneficial and rewarding subject, but also that we have learnt many skills that will help us in our transition to life post-school. And we’ll never forget — debits to the left, credits to the right! ■
